Sonic Eyx is a horror reinterpretation of classic platformer mechanics, placing players in a corrupted version of the familiar Sonic universe. The game opens with what appears to be a traditional Sonic level, complete with familiar backgrounds and music, but it quickly shifts into something darker. Broken sound effects, glitched visuals, and disturbing imagery begin to surface. The gameplay feels familiar at first, but the tone changes as the player discovers they are not in control of an ordinary Sonic title.
As the game continues, environments change unexpectedly, and characters behave in ways that break from their established personalities. Sonic himself takes on a more unsettling form, and encounters with other characters often lead to sudden disappearances or visual glitches. Traditional level progression is replaced by disorienting shifts in space and logic, with paths that loop, textures that melt, and background elements that seem to watch the player. The game uses sound and timing to unsettle rather than jump scares.
Though the basic controls mimic classic platformers—running, jumping, collecting rings—the game introduces moments where inputs stop responding or lead to unexpected consequences. Rings become useless, checkpoints may reset progress, and hidden messages appear in static-filled screens. The sense of forward momentum is constantly interrupted by sequences that remove control, forcing the player to watch or survive until they regain agency.
These features build a horror experience that depends on psychological discomfort.
Sonic Eyx uses its foundation in familiar mechanics to pull players into something they don’t expect. By slowly unraveling what’s real and what’s not, it turns nostalgia into tension. Instead of giving players full control, it forces them to experience helplessness within a space they thought they knew. Every moment of comfort is eventually broken by something wrong, creating an experience where the game’s world feels alive—and watching.
